Our Club
Formed in 1963, Middlewood Rovers have long held a respected reputation for encouraging player development and providing a safe, fun environment for children of all ages and abilities to grow and learn the game.
Having started out life playing friendly games against other local clubs, in 1969 the club joined the newly formed Sheffield & District Junior Football League as founder members.
As boys football grew in stature professional clubs began to take notice, recognising the development potential of the grassroots game. Middlewood Rovers forged links with Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, becoming their official nursery team and playing their home fixtures at Sheffield Wednesday's Middlewood Road training ground.
This association lasted until 1983, the year that saw the implementation of Academies within the professional game by the Football Association. Shortly after, in 1984, Middlewood Rovers moved to their current home, Waverley Lane in Handsworth, Sheffield.
The club has continued to grow over the intervening years, gaining Charter Standard status in 2007 and being voted County Club of the Year in 2008 & 2009. With girls football being introduced in 2007 and the Soccer School in 2012 the club now features 23 sides ranging in age from Under 7 right through to Under 21 and includes boys, girls, senior Men's and for the fist time Senior Ladies league football.
Over the years a number of well known names from the professional game have worn the Blue & Black, including Mel Sterland, Mark Smith, Charlie Williamson, Chris Bart Williams, Carl Bradshaw and Kevin Pressman. More recently players such as Ryan France, Johnathan Forte & Billy Sharpe began their footballing journey at Waverley Lane.
